Changes in the way medications can be prescribed
“Recent changes to the Pharmacy Regulations will
broaden the ability of pharmacists to provide prescription medications to
better serve Nova Scotians.
Starting immediately, a
pharmacist can refill a prescription using her or his own judgment. As well, they can adjust a prescription, for example,
change it from a tablet to a liquid if that will be easier for a patient to
swallow.
Pharmacists can now also prescribe drugs typically sold
from behind the counter or from the area right in front of the pharmacist,
helping patients whose medical plan covers the cost of these drugs only if they
are prescribed.”

Other changes will be coming, likely within the next
several months. These changes will help
ease the problems patients sometimes experience with prescription refills and
one-time prescriptions for certain conditions.
Changes will be posted to this page when available.
